Protecting our youth

Hi Everyone! Happy Tuesday!

Today's post is actually on the recommendation of another mom who brought to my attention how important it is to talk about Sex Offenders. I know as parents we are all so scared of something happening to our children. Dating? What do you really know about your new date, is that guy you've let into your home actually a convicted wife-beater, rapist or child molester with multiple restraining orders. Are you a single Mom or Dad with children? Has your new neighbor taken a special interest in your child, is he or she a convicted child molester or abductor? One thing we can do is check our neighborhoods to see how many offenders are living in our buildings, on our blocks, in a 5 block radius. You can do that by checking www.familywatchdog.us . From there you can look at the pictures of these pedophiles, and check what the crimes were, how much time was served etc.

Another thing you can do is check the Department of Corrections for your state and do searches on the people you are dating. This is public information and in a time where information is at your finger tips on the Internet there is no reason to be clueless about the people around your children. http://nysdocslookup.docs.state.ny.us/

People please be careful. A friend of mine just told me a story that she met a guy, she did a search through the DOC and found out not only had the guy been in jail but he was a sexual offender.

If anyone has more information on ways to protect OUR children please feel free to email the information to me and I will gladly post it on the blog, facebook, and twitter!

Enjoy your day and remember its MommE-talk!

Dear Mr Student Loan

OK this 2nd post today is not really momme talk but it's a rant about student loans LOL, Yes I said Student Loans.

Dear Mr Student Loan,

I am angry really really angry with you today. And this is why: Growing up you hear go to college it will help you, go to college you will get a good job and you will make good money blah blah blah. You get to high school and you do well in school, you may not be a straight A student but you do well enough to get accepted to college. And then the financial aid awards start rolling in, and its loan after loan after loan. For alot of people mommy and daddy don't make enough money or are not in a position to make monthly payments for you, so you (and I ) take out loans. Four years pass and its time to graduate. YES I did the right thing I got that degree. Whats next...making money (well the little bit they give you in your first job) or like me go BACK to school because once again you are told its much easier to just go all the way through. Get your Master's Degree finish quick. When your done with that ooo your gonna have jobs to choose from, salaries to choose from. So you do it again.

Two years later its graduation time again and you take an entry-level job because guess what you have NO REAL WORK EXPERIENCE. Whats the point of all the education when you could gain experience. And if your in a field like mine where hardly no one has a Master's Degree people are looking at you like who cares you have an MA you have NO EXPERIENCE. So you take this job and you still have 6 months before you have to pay back the loans. The 6 months pass and they tell you to pay 400 a month because you are now in debt a whopping $60,000. You defer.

Life begins to happen all around you. You get an apartment, you meet "Mr right" you have a baby and then its time to pay school loans again. You try to get the lowest payment option and you realize even that is too much for you to afford but no one cares.

So now I ask you Mr School Loan: how come you are punishing us? How come we,the people who try to do the education thing are punished? How come no one helps us.? I'm not talking deferral I'm talking no interest, chop half this ish off as long as I'm being a productive member of society. I have no felonies, misdemeanors! I am not on welfare and I give back to my community. I donate to charity and I volunteer. So why cant you take off some of my debt. Shit who is to say in 30 years I will still be alive anyway and then what???

Mr. School Loan I am tired of struggling to pay these stupid school loans that aren't going away. That extra $350 a month can go towards Jade having dance lessons, swim lessons, or a vacation to the beach like she keeps asking me for. And where are all the people you go to tell me to go ahead and go to grad school. Since you know it all can you pay a few months for me because "YOU WERE WRONG" getting my masters isn't helping me right now. In fact its making me more broke!

O and one more thing Mr School Loan, since you are taking all my money how can I start to save for Jade so she never has to go through what I am going through????

Signed an ANGRY, BROKE

Miniature Chefs

How often is it that we are cooking and our children come into the kitchen and just get in the way; Pots and pans on the floor, hands too close to the stove, that little voice calling your name over and over again. Well last night I decided to bring my little chef into the kitchen with me. I picked a meal that she could help with and let her cook alongside me.
Yesterday was pizza night and we made pizza on English muffins. How much fun it turned out to be. Jade took her job very seriously and it was great, she even volunteered to help clean up (imagine that the child's toys are everywhere but she made sure to clean up momme's kitchen).
After having such a successful dinner I have decided I want to ask momme's for any recipes they have for foods, snacks, or drinks that they cook with their children. If you have pictures of your kitchen adventures send that in as well. Training your miniature chef will have great rewards in a few years!

Kids Do the Funniest Things

I've been gone for about 2 weeks and I am so sorry for that. I have been working hard on getting things in order in my life and pushed my blog to the back for awhile. Wrong move I know. I missed it so much and now I have so much to catch up on. Today I'm going to finally write my kids do the funniest things:

Tevina (has a son age 11):
When Man was 4 he told me he knew curse words. I replied, oh yea. He says yea, all of you curse, you, daddy, and proceeded to list every single family member. So I said, if you know a curse word, tell me one. Back and forth we went because he said, I'm not supposed too curse, your gonna beat me. I'm like no, I want to know if you do know curse words so you can say it this once. For like 10 minutes we went back and forth like that. Finally I said if you whisper it in my ear will you tell me? He said yes. Well, I bend down and he whispered, F*&K.I said yea, you know curse words all right.

Kisha (has a son age 3):
One really cold evening we were in Duane Reade on line waiting to purchase medicine. A woman came behind us and commented on how cold it was outside. My son turns around and begins singing "when its cold outsiddeee Girrl who are you holdinggg"

OK and the last entry for today is of course about Jade. The other day she refused to eat. I asked her to please just take one more big girl bite of her sandwich. She took her bite and I praised her. I thanked her for being such a big girl and eating her food. Jade turned to me and took a bow all the while saying thank you thank you very much. I laughed so hard I had to give her the juice she wanted and threw her sandwich away.

Kids definitely say the and do the funniest things. If you would like to see a story of your child next week be sure to email me at ssanders@themommeshop.com
